I was struck over the weekend just how miserable runners in Hyde Park are. What a marvellous setting you share with the Household Cavalry on manoeuvres. Why doesn’t anyone smile? Can’t be because they’re all Russian can it? I must have passed 50 or so fellow exercisers on an admittedly dull and cold morning. No eye contact and not once a nod of encouragement or a grin. Contrast this with the New Forest. Every other runner, walker, dog owner, cyclist, pram pushing couples and even car drivers, on quiet side roads, nods, smiles and says “hello”. At first it’s somewhat disconcerting, you wonder if you know them and struggle to remember where from. But it’s just how it is in the country.
